Born on January 5, 1931, to Mildred Virginia and William Howard Duvall in San Diego, California. Robert Duvall's mother was an actress and his father was a US Navy Admiral. His parents were methodists and therefore Duvall was raised in the religion of Christian Science.
Due to his father’s military career, Duvall’s family moved from time to time between various military bases. He went to Severn School in Maryland, the principia in St. Louis, Missouri. He later graduated at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois in 1953. After graduation, he took after his father and gave his service to the United States Army from 1953 to 1954 and left having attained a Private First Class.
